
Cardinals Spoil Senior Night in Double Overtime

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Fifteenth-ranked Syracuse lost to No. 10 Louisville (12-4, 3-3), 3-2 in double overtime, in Atlantic Coast Conference action Friday night. Syracuse moves to 8-6 overall and 1-5 in the ACC and will be the No. 7 seed in the 2018 ACC Tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C., Nov. 1-5.
Louisville scored in the ninth minute for an early 1-0 lead when Katie Schneider was fed the ball by Mercedes Pastor. Syracuse took its first and only shot in the first half off a corner in the 33rd minute by senior back Roos Weers. She was assisted by Claire Webb and Carolin Hoffmann who stopped and inserted the corner, respectfully.
At halftime, Louisville edged Syracuse 5-1 in shots and 2-1 in penalty corners but 'Cuse's Borg van der Velde had made the only three saves of the half on either end of the field.
Weers scored her second goal of the game, again off a corner and assisted by Hoffmann and Webb, in the 55th minute for a 2-1 Syracuse lead. Seven and a half minutes later Alli Bitting evened the game with a goal off the corner for the Cardinals.
At the end of regulation both teams were in a 2-2 stalemate with Louisville out-shooting Syracuse 8-3 but the Orange defense was backed by five saves from van der Velde, which helped force overtime.
Louisville took two shots in the first overtime period while Syracuse took one. The second Louisville shot came on a corner as time expired in the extra frame but the Orange defense forced the ball out of the circle to head to a second frame.
With 33 seconds remaining in overtime, Louisville was awarded a corner in which Pastor connected with Bitting to give the Cardinals the win.
Prior to the game Syracuse recognized seniors Caroline Cady, Jamie Martin and Weers who now finish their careers with a 30-7 record at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
The Orange have one more regular season game remaining, on the road at St. Joe's in Philadelphia, Pa., on Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. to make adjustments for the upcoming ACC Tournament.
Following Friday's loss, the Orange will be the No. 7 seed and are set to face No. 2 seed Duke at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1 on RSN and ACC Network Extra. Duke won the regular season meeting, 1-0, on Sept. 14 in Syracuse.
