Wake Forest's Three Second-Half Goals Stymie Shorthanded Orange

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After a deadlocked first half, three second-half goals by Wake Forest toppled a shorthanded Syracuse women's soccer team, which was without starting sophomore defender Shannon Aviza and junior forward Sydney Brackett due to injuries, in a 3-0 setback Sunday afternoon.
Syracuse is now 3-14 overall and 0-9 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play with one match left to go in the season.Â
"I thought the first half we competed," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "We knew what they were going to do, and I thought we did a really good job of frustrating them. It was one of those games that was much tighter than the scoreline reflects. The effort and the attitude of our players is fantastic against incredible odds."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Syracuse defense was perfect in the first half, preventing Wake Forest's offense from stringing together any real threats. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jordan Harris held her ground in net, tallying two saves in the first 45 minutes.
After a 0-0 first half of action, the Demon Deacons found their footing 10 minutes into the second. Bri Carney scored her first goal of the year, giving Wake Forest a 1-0 lead.
Wake Forest's Bayley Feist scored in the 67th minute and then again in the 89th minute to put the match out of reach.
OF NOTE
Syracuse's best scoring opportunity came from the boot of freshman forward Meghan Root in the 15th minute. She laced a ball on goal with a strong left-footed strike, but Wake Forest's goalkeeper Nonie Frishette made a sprawling save to keep the match tied at 0-0. Â
Syracuse was shutout for the second consecutive match. Prior to Thursday's 4-0 setback at No. 6 Virginia, Syracuse had scored goals in three consecutive matches. The Orange scored three times against NC State, once against UNC and once more against Notre Dame.
Harris played all 90 minutes in goal and tallied a match-high four saves. She has at least four saves in seven of her last nine starts.
HEAR MORE FROM COACH WHEDDON
"Both Shannon and Sydney had injuries. That's six potential starters we've played without, which has been the story of our season. Many teams aren't facing what we're facing, but our team's continued to work hard."
"Meghan has got better and better as the season's gone on. Early in the season, she was still adjusting to college soccer and the speed of play. I feel like she's one of the players that's emerging as a bright spot for us. She's still learning and developing, but she's someone who can create opportunities for us. Throughout the course of the season, she's one of players who's really grown a lot, and it's been a pleasure to coach her."
WHAT LIES AHEAD
Syracuse returns to SU Soccer Stadium to host Clemson in the final match of the year. The action kicks off at 7 p.m.
