SYRACUSE, N.Y. – One match left.
The Orange's 2018-19 season comes to a close Thursday, Oct. 25, when the Syracuse women's soccer hosts Clemson in the final contest of the year. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. inside SU Soccer Stadium, and the match will be televised on ACC Network Extra via WatchESPN.
"Clemson's very good at creating opportunities," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "Their front three are all great players. They've got great pace, they're all good one-on-one, they'll take shots from anywhere. We've got to make sure our backs are able to deal with the pace."
LAST TIME OUT
After a deadlocked first half, three second-half goals by Wake Forest toppled the shorthanded Orange, who were without starting sophomore defender Shannon Aviza and junior forward Sydney Brackett due to injuries, in a 3-0 setback Sunday in Winston-Salem, N.C.
DEFENSE GIVING OFFENSE A CHANCE
Syracuse has trailed by just one goal past the 66th minute in five of its last seven matches.
The Orange conceded only one goal in both losses against Louisville and Miami. In the losses against Notre Dame, No. 6 Virginia, and Wake Forest, Syracuse trailed by one until the 78th, 70th, and 67th minute, respectively.Â
ORANGE IN PINK
Thursday's match is the Orange's annual Pink Night.
Syracuse will wear pink jerseys during warmups to help raise breast cancer awareness.. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Clemson is coming off a 3-1 win at Virginia Tech, its first win in three matches. Redshirt senior forward Miranda Weslake leads the team with eight goals and 20 points.
Syracuse is 0-4-1 all-time against Clemson. The Orange tied the Tigers, 0-0, last season inside SU Soccer Stadium to snap a four-match series losing streak.
HEAR MORE FROM COACH WHEDDON
"We've got a few things we're trying to do. We've got to move the ball much better than we have been. We had some good spurts against Wake Forest, but it hasn't been consistent enough. We've got to move quickly, and we've got to stretch them."
"Possession, for us, has been inconsistent. We've had too many turnovers in matches, so if we can maintain possession of the ball for long periods, that'll be a psychological win for us. Defensively, our ability to handle their service and set pieces will be critical to our success. If we can possess and deal with set pieces, I think at the end of the day I'll look at it and say, 'That was a successful outing.' Obviously, getting three points would make it even better."
