Avery Scores, Cohen Records 29 Saves in Orange's 4-1 Setback at No. 7 Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Orange took an early lead after redshirt senior forward Brooke Avery scored two minutes into the first period, but that was all the Syracuse hockey team would get, suffering a 4-1 setback on the road against No. 7 Cornell Tuesday night.
The loss snapped Syracuse's two-game winning streak, as the Orange moved to 2-4 overall.
"[Avery's goal] was the start we were looking for," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "It got our bench energized, and we got off to a good start. Unfortunately, we had a couple defensive lapses. A little puck-watching on both of those goals, but from that point on, I thought our kids competed. We had some chances, but we just didn't execute."Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Syracuse made its presence felt early in the first period, jumping all over the nationally-ranked Big Red with a goal in the second minute of play. Avery's goal was her second of the season and marked the third straight game in which the Orange scored first.
Cornell tied the game with a goal two minutes later, however, and then took the lead on a goal by Kristin O'Neill, last season's Ivy League Player of the year. The Big Red entered the first intermission with a 2-1 lead.
Junior goaltender Ady Cohen's 12 saves in the second period kept the game at 2-1. She, backed by Syracuse's defense, killed three Cornell power play opportunities in the period.
Freshman forward Lauren Bellefontaine nearly scored the equalizer with six minutes left to play in the third period, ripping a shot that missed wide by inches. Cornell responded to the threat a few minutes later, however, scoring its third goal and netting a fourth on an empty-netter to win 4-1.
OF NOTE
Both of Avery's goal this season have come against nationally-ranked opponents. She scored her first against No. 6 Boston College (Oct. 6).
Cornell outshot Syracuse, 33-24. Sophomore forward Emma Polaski and freshman forward Abby Moloughney shared a team-high four shots on net.Â
Cohen, who made her third start of the season, finished with a game-high 29 saves.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
Two games against No. 2 Clarkson are up next.Â
Syracuse hosts the Golden Knights at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, before playing on the road at Clarkson one day later. The puck drops at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, in Potsdam, N.Y.
