WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Syracuse redshirt freshman placekicker Andre Szmyt was chosen as one of the three Lou Groza Award "Stars of the Week" on Monday, Oct. 29 for his performance against No. 22 NC State.
Â
The Palm Beach County Sports Commission Lou Groza Award, which is presented by the Orange Bowl, recognizes three of the top FBS kickers each week. In addition to Szmyt, Dominik Eberle of Utah State and Alex Kessman of Pittsburgh earned the honor for Week 9 of the 2018 college football season.
This is the second time this season Szmyt has earned "Star of the Week" status. He was also recognized following his Week 5 performance at Clemson.Â
Â
Against NC State, Szmyt tied his career high with 15 points. He connected on field goals of 29, 45, and 41 yards to set a new Orange single-season record with 21 made field goals, tied for the most in the FBS. He also hit all six of his PATs.
Â
Through eight games, Szmyt is 21-for-23 (.913) on field goals, including a perfect 14-of-14 from inside 40 yards. He has also made all 40 of his extra-point tries. The Vernon Hill, Ill. product is the FBS scoring leader with 103 points, the most ever for a Syracuse kicker in one season, and fifth on the Orange's single-season scoring chart.
