SYRACUSE, N.Y. –The Syracuse women's soccer team's three-match homestand continues Sunday. The Orange welcome No. 3 North Carolina into SU Soccer Stadium for an Atlantic Coast Conference contest, which is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m.
The match will be televised on ACCN Extra via WatchESPN.
LAST TIME OUT
The Orange's attack saw major breakthroughs Thursday night, outshooting No. 23 NC State and scoring a season-high three goals. The offensive barrage was not enough, however, as Syracuse suffered a 6-3 setback.
Junior forward Sydney Brackett gave Syracuse a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the match, scoring off a corner kick. Freshman forward Meghan Root and sophomore midfielder Stephanie deLaforcade both scored their first career goals in the second-half.
A LOOK AROUND THE CONFERENCE
The ACC has six women's soccer teams among the United Soccer Coaches poll, the most of any league, including three teams ranked among the top 10 – No. 3 North Carolina, No. 8 Virginia, No. 10 Florida State, No. 11 Boston College, No. 17 Duke and No. 23 NC State. Virginia Tech is No. 20 in the Soccer America poll, giving the ACC a total of seven ranked teams this week.
SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS
No. 3 North Carolina enters Sunday's match with a 10-2-1 overall record. The Tar Heels are 5-0-0 in conference play, coming off a 2-1 win at Notre Dame Thursday.
Redshirt sophomore forward Taylor Otto leads the team with five goals and 13 points.
The Orange are 0-5-0 all-time against the Tar Heels, losing last year's meeting in Chapel Hill, N.C., by the score of 7-0.
HEAR FROM COACH WHEDDON
"We have enormous respect for North Carolina. I think everyone in the sporting world does for what they've achieved. They're bench is very deep, they have great players in every position. The challenge for us is to limit the number of goal-scoring opportunities that they have, to be disciplined in our approach, not get caught up in a physical battle and take the opportunities that come to us."
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange finish their homestand against Notre Dame at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, before heading to Charlottesville to face Virginia at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18.
