Four Orange Reach Double-Digits in Loss to Oregon

NEW YORK – Despite four players scoring in double-digits, #15/14 Syracuse (2-2) was unable to push past #14/16 Oregon (3-1) Friday evening, losing 80-65, in the 2K Empire Classic to benefit the Wounded Warrior Foundation at Madison Square Garden.

Tyus Battle led the Orange with 17 points that included a 9-of-10 performance from the free throw line. Elijah Hughes and Jalen Carey added 14 points each followed by Oshea Brissett's 11. Hughes and Brissett lead the rebounding effort with five a piece.

The Ducks were led by Bol Bol's career-high 26-point performance. Bol wrangled nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Oregon had a 13-point lead going into halftime and began the second half with a 10-3 run, pushing to its largest lead of the game, 49-34. Syracuse responded with a 7-0 run, cutting the deficit to single digits, 49-41. The Ducks could not be silenced for long as they quickly added five unanswered points for a 54-41 lead. Syracuse notched three free throws and a three-pointer from Brissett but were unable to close the gap to less than 10.
STREAKY SCORING
The first half proved to be streaky for both teams with several back-and-forth scoring runs. Back-to-back three's from Hughes and Carey early in the first half ignited a 7-0 Orange run and produced an 11-6 lead. The Ducks found an answer of their own in the form of a 12-3 run. Kenny Wooten led the offensive charge for the Ducks with six points in the stretch. The Ducks would not trail again the game and they ended the half on a 12-0 scoring run.

OF NOTE
- Syracuse is 2-2 to start the season for the first time since the 1987-88 campaign. The Orange finished that campaign 26-9 with an NCAA berth and won the BIG EAST Tournament Championship.
- The Orange have not lost two games in an in-season tournament since 1978-79 when Syracuse was defeated by Illinois and host Kentucky in the Kentucky Invitational.
- In the first ever meeting between the two schools, Oregon shot 25-0f-51 (49 percent) including a 7-of-18 (38.9 percent) performance from beyond the arc. The Orange went 18-of-52 (34.6 percent) overall, and 5-of-28 (.179) on three-point attempts.
- Oregon outrebounded Syracuse, 35-28, outscored the Orange on second-chance points, 19-7.
- The Ducks dominated points-in-the-paint, 34-20.Â
- Syracuse tallied 24 free throws, marking the second game this season the Orange accumulated 20 or more points from the charity stripe.
- Syracuse forced 17 turnovers by the Ducks and tallied 12 steals. The dozen steals are the most for the Orange since their 12 against Maryland Nov. 27, 2017.
- Hughes led Syracuse with a career-high five steals. Additionally, seven of his 14 points came in the first three minutes of the second half.
