Orange Extra: Thefts and Pressure Part of Syracuse's Success
11/21/2018 1:18:00 PM | Football
SYRACUSE – The Orange close out the regular season against a familiar foe on Saturday when No. 19 Syracuse (8-3, 5-2 ACC) plays at Boston College (7-4, 4-3 ACC). Both clubs are bowl eligible, making the Nov. 24 encounter a big factor in determining where each school's postseason invitation will come from.
FLYING WITH THE EAGLES
The Orange and the Eagles have met 51 times over the years and the Orange own a 31-20 advantage in the all-time series. Boston College has the edge at home with a 13-11 mark in Commonwealth matchups with Syracuse.
Syracuse has a 6-4 lead in the last 10 pairings. Boston College won last year in the Dome, 42-14 while Syracuse won at Alumni Stadium in 2016, 28-20.
Squaring off with the Eagles in the final game of the campaign has almost become a tradition for the Orange since joining the ACC. Saturday marks the 13th time the two programs have closed out the regular season against each other and it's the fifth time the schools will play on college football's final weekend in six ACC campaigns.
DID YOU KNOW?
There are only four schools Syracuse has played more frequently in football than Boston College (51 games) – Pittsburgh (74), Penn State (71), Colgate (67) and West Virginia (60).
RECOGNIZABLE COACHES
Boston College head coach Steve Addazio was an assistant coach at Syracuse from 1995-98 under head coach Paul Pasqualoni. He was the tight ends coach for two years and the offensive line for two seasons. He is 38-37 as the grid boss at Boston College. Before that he spearheaded the program at Temple. Saturday will be Addazio's 100th game as a head coach.
Addazio has two former Syracuse assistant coaches on his staff. Jim Reid, the defensive line coach at Syracuse in 2004, is the defensive coordinator/defensive ends coach for the Eagles. Brian White, who served two years as offensive coordinator/tight ends coach under Greg Robinson at Syracuse, now mentors the BC running backs.
Former Orange player Reggie Terry is an integral part of the Boston College program as well in his role as assistant athletics director for football operations and player personnel. Terry held a variety of different positions on the Syracuse staff from 1993-2006.
CISCO GUILITY OF MULTIPLE THEFTS
Freshman safety Andre Cisco added to his interception total last Saturday against Notre Dame, tallying the sixth pick of his rookie campaign. The six interceptions rank in a second-place tie among FBS performers and are the most by a freshman.
Cisco rates tied for second among ACC player in passes defended average (1.3) and is second among FBS freshmen in total passes defended with 14 (six interceptions, eight breakups). It's the most passes defended ever for an Orange true freshman and ranks second among all freshmen in Syracuse history. Redshirt freshman Steve Gregory logged 21 passes defended back in 2002.
DID YOU KNOW?
Redshirt freshman Andre Szmyt set the ACC single-season record with his 28-yard field goal against Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium. It gave him 28 field goals on the year, one more than the 27 kicked by Florida State's Sebastian Janikowski (1998), Gary Cismesia (2007), Roberto Aguayo (2014) and Clemson's Greg Huegel (2015).
QUARTERBACK PRESSURE
Syracuse and Boston College each feature effective pass rushers. The Orange are averaging 3.2 sacks per game, good for 11th in the FBS ranks and second in the ACC. Junior defensive end Alton Robinson has nine sacks to his credit and ranks third in the league. Robinson's total, combined with junior Kendall Coleman's seven, give the Orange the most productive duo in the ACC with 16 sacks between them.
Boston College has a strong tandem in Wyatt Ray and Zach Allen. Ray has nine sacks and Allen has 6.5.
VETERAN OFFENSIVE LINE KEYS SUCCESS
A portion of the credit for Syracuse's offensive improvement this year lies with the offensive line. Experience has been key for the unit. The group has logged 155 career starts up front, which ranks eighth in the FBS.
Redshirt junior guard Evan Adams and senior tackle Cody Conway each own 31 career starts. Conway has been with the first unit for 28 consecutive contests. This year's front five also includes redshirt sophomore center Airon Servais (23 starts), redshirt senior Aaron Roberts (23 starts), a guard, and right tackle Koda Martin, a redshirt senior who transferred from Texas A&M. Martin started 15 games at tackle for the Aggies and has been with the first string in all 11 games this fall.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Orange were picked to finish last in the ACC's Atlantic Division in the league's preseason poll. A victory against Boston College would clinch second place for Syracuse behind only undefeated Clemson.
