BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Syracuse hockey team outshot its opponent for the third consecutive game but suffered a 2-0 setback against Vermont in the first round at the Windjammer Classic Friday, Nov. 23.
The Orange move to 4-9-1 overall with the loss.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
It took only four minutes into the first period for Vermont to score the game-winning goal. Theresa Schafzahl's goal at the 3:08 mark gave Vermont an early lead, and it was all the Catamounts would need.
Syracuse tallied 30 shots on net and outshot Vermont by 10, but the Catamounts fended off the Orange's attack throughout the game. Vermont killed all three of Syracuse's power play opportunities.
Sammy Kolowrat scored Vermont's second goal midway through the third period, putting the final touches on the Catamounts' 2-0 victory.
OF NOTE
Freshman defenseman Shelby Calof, freshman forward Abby Moloughney and junior defenseman Allie Olnowich shared a team-high three shots on net.
Senior goaltender Maddi Welch started in net and came up with 18 saves. Vermont goaltender Melissa Black carded 30 saves, serving as the last line of defense against the Orange's persistent attack.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
Syracuse plays No. 8 St. Lawrence in the Windjammer Classic third-place game tomorrow. The puck drops at 4 p.m.
