BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Syracuse hockey team was kept in check by an opposing goaltender for the second night in a row, falling 4-0 to No. 8 St. Lawrence at the Windjammer Classic Saturday, Nov. 24.
The Orange is 4-10-1 overall following the setback.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Syracuse and St. Lawrence were deadlocked at 0-0 after the first period, but four second-period goals by the Saints flipped the script.
Rachel Smith scored St. Lawrence's first two goals midway through the second. Charlea Pedersen tacked on the Saints' third goal at 17:50 before Nadine Edney scored the fourth and final goal 37 seconds later.
The Orange tallied 10 of its 20 shots on net in the third period, but St. Lawrence's Sonjia Shelly held her ground, denying all of Syracuse's scoring opportunities.
OF NOTE
Junior forward Anonda Hoppner led the Orange with five shots on net. Senior defenseman Allie Munroe followed behind her with four shots.
Senior goaltender Maddi Welch once again started in net and came up with 26 saves, the most she has recorded since making 27 saves in the Orange's season-opening loss to Boston College.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
Another showdown against one of the best teams in the nation is on deck for the Orange.
Syracuse next travels to Madison, Wisc., to face current-No. 1 Wisconsin in a two-game series. The puck drops at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 and at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2.
