
Mangakahia’s Buzzer Beater Lifts #14 Syracuse Over #16 DePaul in Overtime

Cancun, Mexico – Junior Tiana Mangakahia's reverse barrel roll layup as time expired lifted the 14th-ranked Orange over No. 16 DePaul in overtime to give Syracuse a 83-81 win in the final game of the Cancun Challenge. 'Cuse won its third game in three days to improve to 6-1 on the season.
Mangakahia and Gabrielle Cooper were named to the Cancun Challenge All-Tournament Team while Mangakahia also picked up Tournament MVP honors for her late-game heroics.
The Orange jumped out to an early 12-4 lead in the first. Syracuse held the Blue Demons to just six points in the first quarter and 0-for-15 from behind the arc. Syracuse led by as many as 12 in the second quarter but DePaul cut it to six, 35-29, by halftime.
A jumper by DePaul's Ashton Millender at 7:21 in the third quarter. made it a one-possession game with Syracuse in front 37-34. The Orange answered with an 11-4 run to go ahead by 10 points with under four minutes to play and held its largest lead, by 15 points at 58-43, with 2:08 left in the third.
DePaul strung together a 21-0 run over the next seven-plus minutes to lead 58-54 with 3:55 remaining in the game. Digna Strautmane's step-back jumper that ended the scoring drought and sparked an 8-4 run that was capped by a Kiara Lewis steal and layup to tie the game at 68-all with 1:19 to go. Mangakahia gave the Orange a two-point lead a minute later but DePaul's Chante Stonewall made a tip-in with 0.9 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime.
The Blue Demons led by as many as five in overtime but Syracuse closed the game on a 9-2 run highlighted by Mangakahia's buzzer-beater as time expired for a 83-81 win. The Brisbane, Australia, native scored 11 of Syracuse's 13 points in the extra frame.
Mangakahia had 22 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for her second straight double-double and sixth game scoring in double figures this season. Miranda Drummond added 21 points and seven rebounds while Cooper had a double double with 10 points and 12 boards.
The Orange shot 45.6 percent from the field in the win and out-rebounded DePaul 46-40.
Syracuse rides a five-game win streak into Thursday's ACC/B1G Challenge game at No. 23 Minnesota (5-0) on Thursday. The Golden Gophers are the fourth nationally ranked opponent for the Orange this season. Fans can watch the action live on the B1G Ten Network at 8:30 p.m.
