Orange Captains Selected
11/29/2018 3:14:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Five Syracuse standouts will represent the Orange men's lacrosse program as team captains for the 2019 season, including a trio of players serving in their second stint as 'Cuse captains.
Tyson Bomberry, Austin Fusco and Brad McKinney will be team captains for the second year in a row, while Marcus Cunningham and Peter Dearth were elected for the first time. Team captains are chosen by a team vote.
Bomberry, who missed part of the season with injury last year, still finished second on the Orange with 15 caused turnovers. He proved to be a crucial part of the Orange defense when the squad allowed a full four goals less per game when he was in the lineup than in the five-game stretch from Albany to Rutgers where he suffered his injury and subsequently missed time. He also finished third among field players with 26 ground balls.
Cunningham has started each of the last-two seasons on close defense, missing one game due to injury last season. He had eight caused turnovers and 18 ground balls last season.
Dearth was one of the Orange's top defensive midfielders and proved to be especially dangerous in transition. He saw action in all-15 games last year, finishing with two goals and three assists. He also collected 24 ground balls and caused five turnovers.
Fusco spent the season as Syracuse's top LSM, causing 11 turnovers and collecting 25 ground balls in 2018. Fusco has spent the last-two seasons as a primary LSM and has seen significant playing time in each of the last three years. A team captain a year ago as well, Fusco wears the No. 11 jersey, which is handed down to the team's defensive leader annually.
McKinney saw action in 13 games, posting a goal against Army in the Orange's triple-overtime victory last season. He's played in 29 career games entering his redshirt-senior season.
