CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Junior Guzal Yusupova and senior Maria Tritou went undefeated in singles play, cruising to wins in all three of their respective matches, to highlight the Syracuse tennis team's weekend at the Harvard Invitational.
HOW IT UNFOLDED
Yusupova won all three of her singles matches in straight sets. She started the weekend of play Friday with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Boston University's Remi Ramos before defeating Harvard's Rachel Lim by the score of 6-3, 6-2 Saturday. She closed out her weekend with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph versus Michigan State's Lauren Lemonds Sunday.
Tritou handled business in singles action, as well. She defeated BU's Emily Kim 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 Friday and picked up her second win in straight sets Saturday, taking down Harvard's Annika Bassey by the score of 6-0, 6-1. She earned her third singles win of the weekend Sunday in a 1-6, 6-3, 10-7 win over Michigan State's Davina Nguyen.
Senior Dina Hegab won two of her three singles matches. After losing in three sets (7-6, 4-6, 7-10) to BU's Shelly Yaloz Friday, she responded with wins Saturday and Sunday, defeating Harvard's Chelsea Williams 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 before beating Michigan State's Samantha Memije by the score of 4-6, 7-5, 15-13 to finish her weekend.
Senior Libi Mesh also won two of her three singles matches. She picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win against BU's Lily Burchell Friday, won 6-2, 6-4 versus Harvard's Neha Gupta Saturday and lost 4-6, 4-6 to Michigan State's Nicole Stephens Sunday.
Syracuse faced greater adversity in doubles action, however, suffering setbacks in all six matches. Yusupova and Hegab teamed up and lost three times, as did the pair of Tritou and Mesh.
LOOKING AHEAD
A trip to the 2018 ITA National Fall Championships in Surprise, Ariz., from Nov. 7-11 is on deck for the Orange. Senior Gabriela Knutson, junior Miranda Ramirez, sophomore Sofya Golubovskaya and freshman Sofya Treshcheva qualified for the championships and will wrap up their fall seasons there.
Knutson is Syracuse's lone singles competitor, and the duos of Golubovskaya and Treshcheva and Knutson and Ramirez will compete in the doubles draw.
