SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Redshirt freshman placekicker Andre Szmyt can now add consensus All-American to his growing list of awards.
Â
Szmyt was named a first-team All-American by both the Associated Press and the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) on Monday, Dec. 10. Coupled with his selection to the Walter Camp All-America First Team last week, Szmyt has received first-team honors from three of the five NCAA-recognized selectors to earn the consensus distinction.
Â
The 2018 Lou Groza Award winner as the nation's best kicker, Szmyt is the 20th consensus All-America selection in program history and the 18th Syracuse player to be so honored (Joe Alexander and Ernie Davis were two-time consensus picks). Prior to Szmyt, the Orange's last consensus All-American was Dwight Freeney in 2001.
Â
In addition to Szmyt's accolades, freshman defensive back Andre Cisco earned his second major All-America award Monday. Cisco was voted to the Associated Press All-America Third Team, four days after being voted a Walter Camp Second Team All-American.
Â
An original walk-on who earned a scholarship after six games into the season, Szmyt leads the FBS in field goals made (28), field goals attempted (32), field goals per game (2.33), and points per game (11.8). He is second the nation in scoring (141 points) and tied for eighth in the FBS in field-goal percentage (.875). His 141 points are a Syracuse record and rank third on the Atlantic Coast Conference single-season scoring list.
Szmyt is 21-for-22 from inside 40 yards and 3-for-3 from beyond 50 yards. He has also made all 57 of his point-after attempts this season.
Â
The ACC's Defensive Rookie of the Year, Cisco is a primary reason why the Orange are +14 in turnover margin. He is tied atop the national leaderboard with seven interceptions. Cisco also has 11 pass breakups, giving him 18 passes defended, tied for the most in the country among freshmen and a Syracuse true-freshman record. Cisco's 51 tackles (41 solo) rank fifth on the team. He also has a forced fumble.
Â
The two remaining selectors that make up the NCAA's consensus team are Sporting News and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). Sporting News is scheduled to release its All-America teams tomorrow, while the AFCA will announce its 2018 All-Americans on Wednesday.
Â
Szmyt, Cisco and the rest of the 17th-ranked Orange (9-3, 6-2 ACC) will square off against No. 15 West Virginia (8-3, 6-3 Big 12) in the 2018 Camping World Bowl in Orlando, Fla. on Friday, Dec. 28. Bowl tickets and travel packages are available now at Cuse.com/Camping World.
Â
New season ticket orders and renewals to watch Orange football in 2019 are also being accepted now. Tickets for next season's six-game home slate start at $100 for Syracuse University Young Alumni (Class of 2015 to Class of 2019 graduates) and $125 for the general public. They may be purchased online (Cuse.com/tickets), by phone (888-DOME-TIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B).
Â
The deadline to renew current season tickets is March 8, 2019.
