Moloughney's Goal Not Enough in Orange's Loss to No. 1 Wisconsin
12/2/2018 3:00:00 PM | Ice Hockey
MADISON, Wis. - Freshman forward Abby Moloughney tallied her third goal of the season, but neither she nor the Syracuse hockey team (4-12-1) could match No. 1 Wisconsin's high-powered offensive performance. The Orange lost 9-1 to the top-ranked Badgers Sunday afternoon inside LaBahn Arena.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Wisconsin's offense was hot from the get-go. The Badgers scored three times in the first period, with Sophia Shaver's goal at the 12:00 mark proving to be the game-winning tally. Wisconsin's Emily Clark, who recorded a hat trick, scored two of her three goals in the opening period.
Syracuse did show signs of life in the second period, though. Moloughney scored a shorthanded goal at the 14:37 mark to cut the Orange's deficit to two. Fellow freshman forward Lauren Bellefontaine earned the assist on Moloughney's third career goal.
Just as Syracuse had began mounting a comeback in the second period, the Badgers killed the Orange's momentum. Wisconsin scored six goals - two in the second period and four in the third - to win en route to a 9-1.
OF NOTE
Bellefontaine's assist was her sixth of the season. She leads all Syracuse freshmen in goals (4), assists (6) and points (10) this year.
Senior goaltender Maddi Welch recorded 31 saves in Sunday's contest. She made 79 total saves in two games against the top-ranked Badgers this weekend.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange travel back to Central New York to play a home-and-home series against Colgate. Syracuse hosts Colgate at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 inside Tennity Ice Pavilion before a 3 p.m. meeting Saturday, Dec. 8 in Hamilton, N.Y.
