Chapel Hill, N.C. – Backed by one of the most lethal 3-point performances of the season, the Orange sunk a program and Atlantic Coast Conference record 20 buckets from downtown to earn their fourth-straight win with a 86-80 victory over North Carolina on Thursday night. Gabrielle Cooper and Miranda Drummond scored 28 and 24 points, respectively, and combined for 15 3-pointers in the win.
Tiana Mangakahia recorded her 14th double-double with 10 points and 14 assists bringing her single-season assist total to 282. The Australia native is currently tied with Lindsay Allen (2017) for the ACC single-season assists record with one regular season game to play.
The Orange (21-7, 9-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference) return home for the final regular season game against Boston College on Sunday, Feb. 25. 'Cuse will honor its three seniors, Jasmine Nwajei, Abby Grant and Marisa Romeo, prior to the 2 p.m. tip on ACC Network Extra.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
In what looked like a 3-point shootout for the Orange in the first quarter, Syracuse knocked down 7-of-12 shots from beyond the arc. 'Cuse took a 9-4 lead early in the frame on back-to-back treys from Drummond and Cooper. The Tar Heels were paced by Janelle Bailey who was 4-for-4 from the field and made a pair of free throws to lead all scorers with ten points. The Orange led by one, 28-27, at the end of the first with Cooper and Drummond combining to score 18 of Syracuse's 28 points.
Isis Young tallied the first basket of the second quarter, a layup, to make it 30-27 in favor of the Orange but a quick 10-0 run by the Heels had UNC out in front, 37-30, by the media timeout. 'Cuse was able to capitalize down the final stretch as North Carolina made just one of its last eight field goal attempts to bring the score to within a possession, 41-39. Mangakahia beat the buzzer on a last-second layup to tie things at 41-all heading into halftime.
The two teams kept things close throughout the third quarter but Syracuse was able to pull ahead by four, 66-62 by the end of the quarter.
The Orange drained five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and set a program and ACC record for three-pointers in the game with 20 total in the matchup. Back-to-back treys by Drummond and Cooper with 8:04 to play in the game opened up a 10-point lead for Syracuse, 75-65. The Orange held on to win by six, 86-80, for their fourth-straight win of the season.
OF NOTE
Syracuse knocked down a program and ACC record 20 3-pointers. The previous school record was 17 treys set by the Orange against Rhode Island on Nov. 11, 2016.
Cooper scored a career-high 28 points and tied her career-best mark of eight 3-pointers.
Drummond shot 7-for-8 from downtown and scored 24 points.
Mangakahia tallied her 14th double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 assists. Her 14 assists bring her single-season total to 282 tying the ACC record set by Lindsay Allen of Notre Dame last season.
Q's THOUGHTS
"We did a really good job of pushing tempo," said head coach Quentin Hillsman. "We knew that we had to get up and down the floor. They have three players that can score 20-plus points and two of them got it. The second half was amazing and we did a really good job of attacking early in transition."
