SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Fourth-ranked Syracuse scored in the first two minutes of the game and never looked back in a 19-12 win against Albany in front of 827 fans at the Carrier Dome. In the first half, sophomore Emily Hawryschuk and senior Alie Jimerson paced the Orange attack, scoring three and two goals, respectively, including assisting each other on a score in the opening half. The win gives Syracuse an 11-0 advantage in the series against the Great Danes.
                                                     Â
Hawryschuk led the Orange with four goals and one assist, while Jimerson, Neena Merola and Riley Donahue each had a pair of scores. Senior Emma Powlin led the Great Danes with four goals, while freshman Kyla Zapolski added three.
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Syracuse scored five straight goals in a nine-minute span to take control of the game. Freshman Sam Swart tallied her fourth goal of the season at the 23:38 mark in the first half to start the Orange run. Hawryschuk netted the next score on a free position shot and then Jimerson tallied an unassisted goal as she came from behind the goal on the left side and scored. After Albany scored an own-goal, Emily Resnick scored on a pass from Taylor Gait to give the Orange a 7-2 lead with 15:06 left in the first half.
Â
The Orange closed the first half scoring four goals in row to take an 11-2 lead into the locker room. Junior Natalie Wallon and Merola scored free position goals and then Hawryschuk and Jimerson connected for the next two scores. With 4:10 left in the opening period, Jimerson scored on a Syracuse fastbreak up the middle of the field. Goalie Asa Goldstock started the fast break with a 50-yard clear and then Vanessa Costantino hit Hawryschuk who found Jimerson with the pass on the left side of the net for the score. After Syracuse was assessed a non-releasable penalty the Orange stole the ball and scored on a man-down play as Jimerson returned the favor to Hawryschuk with a pass for a score with 1:24 left in the half to give Syracuse the nine-goal lead.
Â
In the second half after the Great Danes scored four of the first six goals to cut the Orange lead to seven, 13-6, Syracuse held Albany at bay as the teams each scored six goals in the final 20 minutes of the game for the final score of 19-12.
Â
OF NOTE
Goldstock recorded five saves, while freshman Hannah Van Middelem had one in 15 minutes of play and junior Bri Stahrr had one save in four minutes.
Â
Hawyrschuk's four goals give her 10 on the season. She has tallied four goals in two of out three games this season (also vs. Connecticut in the season-opener). Merola is second on the team with seven goals.
Â
Syracuse, which leads the nation in scoring and points per game, once again used a balanced offensive attack as 12 different players recorded at least one goal in the game.
Â
The Orange improved their Carrier Dome record to 146-31 in their 21-year history.
