No. 7 Maryland jumped out to an early lead and used staunch goalie play to hold off the Syracuse women's lacrosse team, winning 9-5 in both teams' season opener.
Maryland netminder JJ Suriano made 16 saves in the game, proving to be the deciding factor in an otherwise tight game. The teams split draw controls 8-8, and 'Cuse out-shot Maryland 38-19.
Caroline Trinkaus led the scoring with a pair of goals, while Molly Guzik, Joely Caramelli and Mileena Cotter added tallies for Syracuse. Guzik also was strong in the circle, coming away with six draw controls and Mackenzie Salentre led the defense with four caused turnovers. Daniella Guyette made eight saves on the 17 shots on cage.
The Terrapins opened the game with three-straight goals, to jump out an early advantage through the first quarter. Lauren Lapointe scored two goals in the stretch, with Kayla Gilmore adding the other.
Caroline Trinkaus ended the drought less than a minute into the second period, but three-straight Terp goals over the next-13 minutes extended the Maryland lead to five. Kristen Shanahan scored with eight minutes to play in the half, before Lapointe added her third of the day with 3:43 left before intermission. Kori Edmondson scored 45 seconds later.
Trinkaus scored her second of the day while player down, finding the back of the net on a low bouncer with 10:20 left in the third quarter. Shanahan scored her second of the evening with 5:36 left in the frame, to pull Maryland's lead back to 7-2.
Molly Guzik notched her first of the year in the waning moments of the third quarter to head to the final frame with the Orange down 7-3.
Lapointe's fourth and fifth of the game opened the fourth-quarter scoring to give Maryland its largest lead with 9:26 remaining in regulation.
Caramelli and Cotter finished the game with back-to-back goals to give the final tally at 9-5.
Syracuse returns to action on Friday, Feb. 13, hosting No. 1 North Carolina at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Cuse.com/Lacrosse-Tickets.
