Orange Knock Off Virginia Tech for Sixth Straight Win

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Syracuse tennis team knocked off No. 30 Virginia Tech, 5-2, for its ninth win of the season and first against a top-50 opponent.

"It was a tremendous team effort today by the ladies," said head coach Younes Limam. "They believe in each other, they fight for each other and they love playing for each other. That's usually a good combination for a very successful team."

The Orange tallied their fifth consecutive doubles point victory, taking the doubles round two sets to one. Sofya Golubovskaya and Anna Shkudun cruised to a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles but it was the No. 1 duo of Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez that clinched the doubles point for the Orange with a narrow 7-5 win.

Golubovskaya and Dina Hegab snagged the first singles wins for the Orange, defeating their Virginia Tech opponents 6-0, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-1, respectively. A loss at No. 2 singles for Ramirez (7-6 (14-12), 6-1) made it a 3-1 match with three sets to go.

The remaining three singles matches were all three-set affairs with Shkudun ultimately clinching the match for Syracuse with a 6-0, 1-6, 7-5 victory at No. 4 singles. At No. 1 singles, Knutson battled back to a 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 victory over No. 61 Natalie Novotna to put away the match for Syracuse.
