Big Red win 13-8 in final road game
The No. 6 Syracuse men's lacrosse team (6-4, 3-0 ACC) saw its three-game win streak snapped at the hands of No. 11 Cornell (8-3, 4-1 IVY), 13-8 on Tuesday night in Ithaca, N.Y.
The Big Red used a pair of three-goal runs to turn a 2-2 game into an 8-3 game in the first minute of the second half, to create a deficit that the Orange couldn't overcome.
"I thought Cornell played very well at home here tonight," said head coach John Desko. "Their goalie was exceptional and it surprised us because I thought we were going to see a right-handed goalie and a lefty came out and made some key saves in the first half. We didn't quit the whole game. Our guys played hard in the second half with a couple mistakes but Cornell is a good team.
"We've had a tough schedule this year with all of our opponents being fairly highly ranked. It's only going to help us get better. We have to win some of these games too, though, so we have to get back at it tomorrow to understand who the Tar Heels are and get ready for Saturday."
'Cuse held the nation's leading scorer Jeff Teat to two goals, but he chipped in four assists to lead the way with six points for the Big Red. Four of his six points came in the first six goals for Cornell. Caelahn Bullen made 14 saves in net for the home team, to keep 'Cuse to eight goals on the afternoon.
The Orange were led by a four-point day from Stephen Rehfuss, who scored a highlight reel goal and contributed a trio of assists. Jamie Trimboli (1-1), Tucker Dordevic (1-1) and David Lipka (2-0) also had multi-point games for the Orange. Nate Solomon, Brendan Curry and Brendan Bomberry also scored for 'Cuse. Dom Madonna had nine saves in cage.
Â
Cornell scored the game's first two goals, with Teat and Jonathan Donville each finding the back of the net in the first-five minutes. Dordevic and Bomberry then scored 44 seconds apart to even things back up with 8:17 left in the first quarter.
Jake Mcculloch, Donville and Jon Piatelli tallied three in a row for the Big Red to end the first up 5-2.
Brendan Curry halted the run by taking a feed from Rehfuss and dodging from X for the score to pull the Orange back to within two, but that's as close as they'd get the rest of the way.
Clarke Petterson and Mcculloch scored the remaining goals of the second quarter and Connor Fletcher opened the third quarter with a goal.
Solomon scored his goal on a bounce shot through contact, but Jordan Dowiak and Petterson scored another two to close the quarter up 10-4.
Rehfuss, Lipka (twice) and Trimboli all scored in the fourth for SU, but it was too late to overcome the deficit.
Next, Syracuse will look to close its ACC slate a perfect 4-0 for the second-straight season, when North Carolina visits the Carrier Dome for the conference finale. That game is slated for a 4 p.m. faceoff on ESPNU.
