THE NORTH CAROLINA SERIESÂ
- The Orange and the Tar Heels meet Saturday for the 25th time, with Syracuse controlling the all-time series, 16-8 and having won four of the last-five matchups with Carolina.
- The two teams have met twice in each of the last-three seasons, playing in the Tar Heels in the ACC Semifinal each of the last-three seasons.
- The two most recent matchups have ended in one-goal thrillers. Paolo Ciferri knotted the game late so Sergio Salcido could win it in overtime at Fetzer Field, but Carolina took the ACC Tournament game. The Orange trailed by nine at halftime, but stormed out of the locker room and nearly came all the way back, falling 16-15 as a potential game-tying shot didn't make it through traffic as time expired.
'CUSE WINS 900th GAME
- Syracuse became the second program in NCAA Divsion I lacrosse history to win 900 games last Saturday.
- Johns Hopkins (979), Syracuse (901) and Maryland (817) are the only three programs with 800 or more wins. Navy is 4 from the plateau and Army is 14.
- There are six other programs in the 700 win club, Johns Hopkins (979), Maryland (817), Navy (796), Army (786), Hobart (769) and Cornell (755). All but the Terps appear on the Orange's 2018 schedule.
CLINCHED
- Syracuse has clinched the No. 1 seed in this month's ACC Tournament, with Duke being the only team that can reach the Orange's share of the conference regular season title. 'Cuse holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Blue Devils.Â
-This will be the second-straight season the Orange are the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament.
- Since joining a conference for the first time in 2010, Syracuse has won eight titles (either regular season or conference tournament) in eight seasons. Winning the league outright with a win on Saturday would make it at least nine titles in nine seasons.
CONFERENCE KINGSÂ
- After last Saturday's win over Notre Dame, Syracuse has now extended its winning streak in regular season conference games to eight.Â
- 'Cuse is 3-0 in league play this season and swept the conference last year. The last time the Orange lost was against Notre Dame in the 2016 season.
- Since joining the ACC in 2014, Syracuse is 13-7 in regular season conference play.
A WIN AGAINST NORTH CAROLINA WOULD...
- Be the program's 902nd victory, second all-time behind Johns Hopkins.
- Improve SU's record to 56-18 since the start of the 2014 season
-Â Give John Desko his 243rd career coaching win, fifth among active Division I coaches and move him into a tie for 23rd all-time at the NCAA Division I level.
DOMINANT DOWNERS
- The Syracuse man-down unit entered the game against Notre Dame ranked 59th of 68th nationally, before coming away with an 8-for-8 performance in Saturday's win over Notre Dame and went another 3-for-3 against Hobart, killing 11-straight penalties against them. The Orange killed 1-of-2 against Cornell, making them 12 of their last-13.Â
- The Orange have risen to 34th overall in the nation (.676) in man-down defense after the three games.Â
- The 8-for-8 performance is the best in head coach John Desko's 20-year tenure at the helm of the program.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
- Jamie Trimboli accomplished the rare feat of breaking into the Orange's starting lineup as a true freshman in 2017 and Tucker Dordevic and Brendan Curry have followed suit in 2018.
- Doing it as an offensive player is even more astonishing. After Mike Leveille started 13 games in 2005 and Pat Perritt started 13 games in 2006, no true freshman offensive player had started 10-or-more games for the Orange. However, Trimboli (10 games in 2017) and Dordevic (10 games in 2018) have already accomplished the feat. Brendan Curry (five starts) is well on his way to becoming the third player to do so.
-Â Trimboli started 10 games, and appeared in all-16, registering 13 goals and two assists on the first midfield line.
- This season, Trimboli's the elder statesman. If the current line stays the same, Syracuse would have three true freshman starting 10-or-more games on the offensive side of the field in the last-two seasons. They hadn't had one player do so in 11 years prior.
TYSON'S RETURN
- Syracuse was without Tyson Bomberry at full strength for nearly half the season thus far.
-Â While he finished the game, Bomberry was injured against Albany and didn't return to the starting lineup until Duke.
- In that five-game stretch from Albany to Rutgers, Syracuse allowed 13.6 goals per game and went 2-3.
- In the five games that Bomberry has started and completed healthy, 'Cuse is allowing just 8.2 goals per game and owns a 4-1 record.
