SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In her last match at Drumlins Tennis Club, graduate student Anna Shkudun fittingly clinched the Orange's 4-0 victory over Notre Dame with a 7-5, 6-2 win at fourth singles. Shkudun and fellow senior Nicole Mitchell were honored on Senior Day for their final home match as members of the Orange.
"I am extremely proud of [Anna], she means a lot to the program," said head coach Younes Limam. "Since the day she got here she has taken the program to new heights. I'm proud of the team and the leadership from her and Nicole. We talked about how it was not going to be easy and that we were going to have to fight and the response from our team was extremely good."
Syracuse came into Sunday's match looking to halt a three-game skid and defeat Notre Dame for just the second time in program history. The Orange used the energy from the home crowd to jump out to an early lead with a quick doubles victory.
Shkudun and Golubovskaya recorded a 6-0 victory at third doubles, while Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez sealed the doubles point for 'Cuse with a 6-4 victory at first doubles.
Knutson kept the momentum rolling for the Orange, tallying a decisive 6-3, 6-2 victory at first singles to give Syracuse the 2-0 lead. The junior finished the season with a 9-1 record in singles action when playing inside the friendly confines of Drumlins Tennis Club.
After taking a match off in singles play against Duke, junior Libi Mesh was ready to go against the Fighting Irish, posting a 6-0 win in set one of her fifth singles match. Mesh continued to dominate the court, tallying a 6-2 victory in set two for her 10th win of the season. She becomes the sixth Orange to record 10 or more singles victories this year.
At fourth singles, Shkudun fought her way to a 7-5 victory in set one, before taking a decisive 6-2 win in set two to clinch the match for Syracuse. Shkudun was also the match-clincher two years ago when Syracuse beat Notre Dame for the first time in program history.
With the match decided, the second, third and sixth singles matches went unfinished, although there were a pair of three-set battles occurring at second (Ramirez) and third (Golubovskaya) singles.
