Desko Wins ACC Coach of the Year
5/2/2018 3:10:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Head Coach John Desko became the first coach in ACC men's lacrosse history to win ACC Coach of the Year in four consecutive seasons after mentoring the youngest team in his 20 years as head coach to an ACC Regular Season Championship.
The award was voted on by the league's head coaches.
Desko extended Syracuse's winning streak in conference games to nine after sweeping the league for the second year in a row. Desko and Co. will begin conference play in 2019 having not lost a league game since the middle of the 2016 season.
With just five players and two starters in their final year of eligibility and two true freshman in the starting lineup, Desko is leading the most inexperienced bunch in his tenure. Prior to last season, Syracuse hadn't had a true freshman start in 10-or-more games on the offensive side of the field since 2006. With its current lineup, 'Cuse will have seen three players do so in the last-two seasons, including two this year.
Picked to finish fourth in the league's preseason poll, even receiving at least one last place vote, Desko marched the Orange to a 4-0 record in conference play once again. His team has also faced one of the most difficult gauntlets in the country. Currently ranked as the No. 3 strength of schedule in the nation, Desko's squad enters the regular season finale having weathered the storm and serving as the only team in the country with two wins over the RPI top-five.
Replacing two Tewaaraton Award Watch List members and five starters off the 2017 team, Desko's bunch stands in good position to make the NCAA Tournament for the 10th-straight season and 19th time in Desko's 20 years.
In the Orange's five years in the ACC, Desko has won four coach of the year honors, two ACC tournament titles and two conference regular season titles. Since first joining the BIG EAST in 2010, Desko has claimed nine conference championships – either regular season or tournament – in nine seasons.
Desko and the Orange return home on Saturday for the regular season finale against Colgate at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra. Tickets cost just $10 for adults and $5 for youth (12 and under) and can be purchased at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), at Cuse.com/Tickets, or by calling 888-DOME-TIX.
