Syracuse legend Ryan Powell is set to become the 28th member of the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame this fall, when the Orange's second-leading scorer all-time takes his rightful place amongst the greatest players in the sport's history.
Powell, the second of three brothers who dominated the sport for a decade at Syracuse, joins older brother Casey in the Hall of Fame and his first head coach at 'Cuse – Roy Simmons Jr. – among other Orange legends to be enshrined.
The Carthage, N.Y. native came to Syracuse for the 1997 season, finishing his career as a four-time All-American. He was named the Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award winner for the nation's most outstanding player in 2000, in the last year before the Tewaaraton Award began. He was also named the nation's top attackman as a senior, with the Lt. Col. Jack Turnbull Award.
Powell capped off his storied career by leading the Orange to the 2000 NCAA Championship, in a season where the Orange went 15-1 and Powell contributed 96 points – the second most in a season ever for a Syracuse player. His career ended with 287 career points, which ties his brother Casey for the second-most in an Orange uniform, only surpassed by his younger brother Mike (307).
After college, Powell went on to play professionally until 2010, splitting between both the NLL and MLL. A two-tome player at the FIL World Championships with the U.S. Men's National Team, Powell led the Americans to gold in 2010. During his eight year stint with the NLL, Powell racked up 140 goals and 377 points. Outdoors, he scored 190 career goals and posted 180 assists, also earning All-Star MVP honors in 2008.
He joins Casey Powell (2017), Dom Fin (2016), Charlie Lockwood (2016), Tim Nelson (2012), Roy Colsey (2012), Todd Curry (2009), Tom Marechek (2008), Pat McCabe (2006), Gary Gait (2005), Paul Gait (2005), Brad Kotz (2001), Dick Finley (1999), Oren Lyons (1992), Roy Simmons Jr. (1991), Ron Fraser (1987), Jim Brown (1983), William Fuller (1981), Stew Lindsay (1976), Louis Robbins (1974), William Ritch (1972), Victor Jenkins (1967), Glenn Thiel (1965), Roy Simmons Sr. (1964), Victor Ross (1962), Frederick Fitch (1961), Irving Lydecker (1960) and Laurie Cox (1957) as Syracuse players in the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
