Tooker, Affolder and Stoner qualify in the Steeple
Paige Stoner put a blistering pace down to set new school and facility records, while advancing to the NCAA Championships, where she'll be joined in the steeplechase by teammates Noah Affolder and Aidan Tooker who also qualified by going one-two.
Stoner led from the gun through the bell, running a time of 9:48.73. Her time bested her own school record from earlier this year and is the third-fastest time in the nation this season. Sydney Leiher out-ran her seed in the event, finishing 31st overall in 10:31.94.
Affolder won his heat with a time of 8:45.88 after coming back from fourth over the final lap and a half. Tooker was out in front pair for nearly the majority of the second half of the race, finishing in 8:46.33. Both earned automatic spots to Eugene for their performance. It's Tooker and Stoner's second-straight trips in the steeple and first NCAA Championship for Affolder, a true freshman.
Â
The trio of steeplers join Colin Bennie, who qualified in the 10k on Thursday in going to Eugene. Four more will look to punch their tickets on Saturday in the 5k and 110-meter hurdles.
Angelo Goss and Matt Moore took care of business in Friday's prelims and will race on Saturday to attempt to get to their second NCAA Championship of the year.
Goss earned one of the automatic qualifying spots, by crossing the line in third in his heat (13.78), in a time that was the 10th-fastest on the day. Matt Moore had to sweat it out a bit, finishing fourth behind Goss in their heat, but earning one of the qualifying spots based on time. He crossed the line in 13.82 seconds, a season best for him, and the 12th fastest of all the first-round runners.
Â
Richard Floyd narrowly missed joining them, finishing 23rd overall – faster than two of the automatic qualifiers – and just 0.01 seconds shy of advancing. He also ran a season-best mark of 13.97 seconds. David Gilstrap finished 36th in 14.26 seconds.
In the women's 100-meters, Tia Thevenin took 41st with a time of 13.61 seconds.
Action will continue at 3:25 p.m., when Dasia Pressley and Imani Clark run in the 200-meter prelims. Later on, Noah Affolder, Aidan Tooker, Paige Stoner and Sydney Leiher will look to punch tickets to Eugene in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
