ATLANTA – Syracuse's (30-20) seventh-inning rally fell short against Louisville (33-19) and the Orange lost 2-1 to the Cardinals in the first round of the ACC Championship on Wednesday afternoon.
Junior Alicia Hansen drove in the lone run for 'Cuse with a solo homer. Senior AnnaMarie Gatti started in the circle for the Orange and surrendered two runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Sophomore Alexa Romero added three innings of hitless play with four strikeouts.
Megan Hensley went the distance for Louisville, allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts. Jenna Jordan and Kyra Snyder drove in the two runs for the Cardinals.
How it was Decided
Louisville took an early 1-0 lead after an RBI single by Snyder in the bottom of the second. The Cardinals doubled their lead in the third when another run came home on a double from Jordan.
Syracuse got on the board in the fourth inning when Hansen hit a solo homerun to left field with one out.
Junior Bryce Holmgren led off with a single in the top of the seventh and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Gabby Teran. Hensley retired the next two batters in order to secure the win for Louisville.
Of Note
Hansen finishes the season with a team-high five homers. She has nine total long balls through her first three seasons at Syracuse.
Holmgren extends her reached base streak to 23 consecutive games. She'll start the 2019 season half way to her program-record of 46 consecutive games reaching base.
The 'Cuse pitching staff wraps up the regular season with a 2.35 ERA, which is the lowest total the program has produced since the 2012 team posted a 1.70 ERA.
The Orange return nine student-athletes that appeared in 30 or more games along with two pitchers that have pitched on 20 occasions.
