Justyn Knight earned USTFCCCA Northeast Region Performer of the Year honors, as he enters the NCAA Championships with the nation's fastest time in the 5k, while Chris Fox was named USTFCCCA Men's Coach of the Year for leading six 'Cuse men to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Knight – who is on The Bowerman Watch List for the top athlete in collegiate track and field – will race in his final Syracuse race next Friday as he seeks his third NCAA Championship of the year. The ACC Champion in the 5000-meters this season to complete his 11th individual conference title at 'Cuse, Knight also won his heat at the NCAA East Prelim to advance to Eugene for the fourth-straight season.
Knight has already claimed the NCAA title in cross country and the indoor 5k, while earning silver in the 3000-meters as well at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
One of the most decorated athletes in ACC history, Knight posted two of the fastest times in NCAA history this season. His 5000-meter run time of 13:18.74 at the Payton Jordan Invite is the 10th-fastest in collegiate history and trails his time from 2017 (13:17.51) on the list. He's the only man with two top-10 times on the list. Knight also posted the seventh-fastest 1500-meter time in NCAA history at the Bryan Clay Invitational (3:36.07).
Fox has guided the Orange to unprecedented levels of success in his tenure at Syracuse. After leading the Syracuse men to a second-place finish at the ACC Championships, tying for the best finish in program history at an outdoor conference championship, seven 'Cuse athletes will make their way to Eugene to compete at the NCAA Championships.
The Orange came away with four ACC titles at the conference championships, winning the 3000-meter steeplechase (Noah Affolder and Paige Stoner), 110-meter hurdles (Angelo Goss) and 5000-meters (Knight). The 5k was in dominant fashion as the Orange putting six in the top-seven, including the top-four.
At the NCAA East Prelims, Fox saw Knight (5k), Stoner (steeple), Affolder (steeple), Aidan Tooker (steeple), Matt Moore (110-meter hurdles), Colin Bennie (10k) and Philo Germano (5k) each qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Action gets underway on Wednesday on the ESPN family of networks.
