Syracuse, N.Y. – For the first time in 11 years the Syracuse University men's rowing team will travel across the pond to compete in the world famous Henley Royal Regatta. The Orange are one of 10 teams from the U.S.A. competing in the Temple Challenge Cup, nine of which are NCAA Division I institutions.
Established in March 1839 in Henley-on-Thames, England, Henley takes place on The Straight Course, a 2,112-meter course on River Thames. The regatta lasts five days and races are head-to-head with one race per day for each boat.
This year there are 565 total entries, 11 overseas and 454 from England.
Familiar foes Brown, Cornell, Princeton, Temple, UCSD, Washington and Yale will all race in the Temple Challenge Cup with Syracuse while Orange Coast College is the only non-NCAA Division I school from the U.S. competing. The Temple Challenge Cup is the classified as the only male student heavyweight eight race at Henley.
Syracuse will bring one heavyweight eight boat to England. Eleven Orange oarsmen (Matt Barni, Sam Busco, Mike Glaude, Josh Hockenberry, Pieter Kerpestein, Kyle Leimeister, Noah Messner, Sveta Radovic, Dominic Santora, Forrest Sears and Sunlee Stechuk) will all make the trip to Henley. The Orange lineup will be set in the coming days.
Syracuse departs June 26 giving the Orange time to settle in and see the sights before racing begins July 4.
The race schedule and matchups will be released June 30.
