Paige Stoner – a three-time All-American this season, the first top-20 finisher at the NCAA Cross Country Championships for a Syracuse woman and NCAA bronze medalist in the 3000-meter steeplechase, among numerous other honors – was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American for her success as a student-athlete.
Stoner continues a long lineage of academic and athletic success for the Syracuse cross country and track and field programs under head coach Chris Fox. A Fox student-athlete has been named a CoSIDA Academic All-American in each of the last-seven seasons. Stoner is the first women's track and field athlete to earn the honor since Jullian Drouin in 2008. In total, Stoner becomes the 10th to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors under Fox.
A junior from Pottsville, Pa., Stoner began her fall with the most successful cross country season by an Orange woman ever. She raced her way to an ACC Individual Championship – the first 'Cuse women's title – as Justyn Knight won the men's individual title to complete the sweep. Stoner then went on to finish second at the NCAA Northeast Regional and race to a 17th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in Louisville. The result earned her USTFCCCA All-America honors, the first of three on the year for her.
The fall also saw Stoner earn ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year honors for cross country.
In indoor track, Stoner continued to re-write the Syracuse record books, breaking the program record in the 5000-meters (15:44.04) by a wide margin, en route to finishing on the podium in two different events at the ACC Championships. Stoner took third in both the 3000 and 5000-meter runs at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, setting her up for the 5k at the NCAA Championships.
Stoner again raced her way to an All-America worthy performance to conclude her indoor season. She finished eighth in the event, scoring for the Orange and garnering USTFCCCA First Team All-America honors.
The outdoor season saw more record-worthy performances. She broke her own record in the 3000-meter steeplechase on multiple occasions, concluding with a 9:46.98 at the NCAA Championships, in an event that she finished third overall, again earning USTFCCCA First Team All-America honors.
To get there, she started with the 10k at the Stanford Invitational, turning in one of the nation's fastest times of 32:33.72. She also posted a near-Syracuse record at the Payton Jordan Invitational (15:41.26), which was just-off record pace.
At the ACC Championships, she started the weekend by winning another conference title, easily cruising to the win in the 3000-meter steeplechase. One night later, Stoner earned another podium place, taking third in the 5k.
Majoring in psychology, Stoner will have one year remaining on the track, looking to continue to re-write the Orange record books.
