Arizona Western DB DuWayne Johnson Signs with Orange

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University football team added another member to its incoming class today.

Defensive back DuWayne Johnson has signed a scholarship agreement with the Orange and is expected to join the program later this summer, Syracuse head coach Dino Babers announced. A transfer from Arizona Western College, Johnson is a redshirt junior with two seasons of eligibility remaining beginning in 2018.

Johnson appeared in eight games for Arizona Western last fall. He had 17 tackles to help the Matadors to a 9-1 record and an appearance in the NJCAA national championship game.

A 2015 graduate of H.D. Woodson High School in Washington, D.C., Johnson spent his first two collegiate seasons at Virginia Tech.

Johnson recorded 102 tackles, 62 pass breakups and eight interceptions during his prep career at Woodson. As a senior captain, he registered 46 tackles, 31 pass breakups and two interceptions to lead the Warriors to the city championship and the 2014 D.C. State Athletic Association (DCSAA) Class AA state title. Johnson was named to the 2014 American Family Insurance All-USA Washington, D.C Team by USA Today and was chosen by the paper as the state's defensive player of the year.

The Orange report for preseason camp in August. The 2018 season opener is set for Friday, Aug. 31 at Western Michigan. Syracuse's first home game is Saturday, Sept. 8 versus Wagner.
