GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the second year in a row, Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez have been recognized by the Atlantic Coast Conference for their combination of success in the classroom and on the court.
Â
The Orange duo were named to the 2018 All-ACC Academic Women's Tennis Team, released today by the conference. Of the 32 student-athletes on this year's team, Knutson and Ramirez were two of 12 who have received multiple All-ACC Academic honors during their careers.
Â
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the team are a 3.0 grade-point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's undergraduate academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered.
Â
A broadcast journalism major in Syracuse's prestigious S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Knutson finished the campaign ranked No. 8 nationally in singles to become the first Orange tennis player to earn All-America honors since Erica O'Neill did so in 1995. Knutson posted a record of 21-5 in singles action and reached the Round of 16 in the 2018 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship.
Â
The first All-ACC First Team selection in program history, Knutson was 12-2 during conference play.
Â
Ramirez, who is enrolled in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, recorded an 11-12 singles record and a 17-7 mark in doubles. Her work with Knutson helped propel the Orange to one of the best seasons in team history. The two combined to form one of the country's top doubles teams, finishing No. 8 nationally with a 16-4 record.
Â
Ramirez and Knutson advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2018 NCAA Women's Tennis Doubles Championship. By virtue of their No. 8 ranking, the pair became the first twosome in school history to be awarded All-America honors in doubles.
Â
In 2018, Syracuse earned its second-ever NCAA Tournament invitation. The Orange started the season unranked and eventually climbed to No. 25 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings. They closed the campaign with a 17-8 overall record.
