The Syracuse women's track and field team, plus 11 individual student-athletes were recognized for their incredible academic success in the 2017-18 season by the USTFCCCA.
The 'Cuse women were honored with the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honor, while five women and six men were tabbed as USTFCCCA All-Academic Individuals.
The honors continue a long string of academic success for the program, which has seen at least one of its programs highlighted with the All-Academic Team honor for cross country and/or track and field since 2009. In addition, the men's cross country team was named USTFCCCA Scholar Team of the Year and eight have earned CoSIDA Academic All-American honors since then as well, most recently Colin Bennie and Paige Stoner, members of the 2018 squad.
This year's athletes to earn All-Academic accolades were Iliass Aouani (civil engineering), Bennie (public administration), Danielle Delgado (public health), Philo Germano (sport venue and event management), David Gilstrap (health and physical education), Dominic Hockenbury (biology), Shannon Malone (political science), Dasia Pressley (communication science and disorders), Paige Stoner (psychology and selected studies in education), Tia Thevenin (psychology) and Aidan Tooker (communication and rhetorical studies).
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards: For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season in the top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top-48 in a relay event. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships.
The All-Academic Team Award is presented to teams with a cumulative GPA above 3.0.
Stoner headlines the list from a performance standpoint, after taking third at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 3000-meter steeplechase and also earning USTFCCCA First Team All-America honors during her indoor campaign.
Tooker concluded his standout sophomore campaign with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 3000-meter steeplechase and qualified for the final at the USATF Championships in the event.
Germano and Bennie were both USTFCCA Second Team All-Americans in the outdoor season, qualifying for the 5k and 10k, respectively, in Eugene, Oregon.
Aouani, Gilstrap, Hockenbury, Pressley, and Thevenin were each qualifiers for the NCAA East Preliminary Round and Delgado and Malone each had stellar indoor seasons, posting top times in the 60-meter hurdles and 5000-meter run.
