#CampCuse: Week 3 Notebook

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – With less than two weeks remaining until the season opener against Western Michigan, preseason camp is winding down. The Orange concluded its third week of workouts yesterday with a light session following Saturday's 125-play scrimmage.
Speaking of the scrimmage, head coach Dino Babers said Saturday's outing was more evenly contested than the opening camp scrimmage, in which the defense had the upper hand.
"I thought there were some explosives plays out there," Babers said. "Some really good hitting from the defense, some turnovers, the offense scored some touchdowns. It was a much more balanced scrimmage than the first one."

On Friday, ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith was in Syracuse. In addition to hosting his national radio show from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, the "First Take" star spent more than an hour addressing the Orange football team. Smith shared his personal story, as well as his thoughts on greatness, and maximizing potential. He also took questions.
CONNECTING WITH THE COMMUNITY
In addition to daily practices and meetings, the Orange took time to participate in two community engagement events last week. On Saturday, Syracuse Athletics hosted the Preferred Mutual 'Cuse Family Fun Fest, which included a "Fans vs. Football" skills challenge and photo opportunities.
Yesterday, the Orange welcomed youth football players from Fort Drum to the Ensley Athletic Center for a skills clinic and autograph session. The interactions were part of "Fort Drum Youth Football Day," an event that aligns with Chancellor Kent Syverud's commitment to make Syracuse University the best place in America for veterans.

Watch lists for college football's national awards are still being released, and two Orange were noted as preliminary candidates for awards last week. Eric Dungey was named to the watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, presented to the nation's top senior quarterback, while Koda Martin landed on the watch list for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award. The Campbell Award goes to the country's best Division I offensive player with ties to the state of Texas.
