Both teams opened the 2018 season on Friday night. Syracuse defeated Oregon State, 2-1, while Portland, which received votes in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll, played to a 1-1 tie against Sacramento State.
ORANGE REWIND
Freshman Ryan Raposo scored in the 73rd minute to break a 1-1 tie and give Syracuse a 2-1 victory at Oregon State in the season opener. The Orange never trailed as junior Severin Soerlie scored in the fifth minute to give Syracuse the early lead. The Beavers tied the game in the 69th minute on a penalty kick, but Raposo's goal less than five minutes later secured the win. The victory was the 80th for head coach Ian McIntyre since taking over the helm of the Orange program.
SCOUTING THE PILOTS
Portland was picked to finish second in the West Coast Conference in a preseason vote by the league's head coaches. The Pilots return 12 letterwinners from last year's squad that posted a 9-7-1 record. Juniors Benji Michel and Rey Ortiz were named to the initial MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and were selected to the West Coast Conference Preseason Team. Ortiz ranked second in the nation in assists per game and was third in total assists last season. Michel led the Pilots with 10 goals in 2017 and scored Portland's goal in its season opener.
