SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team starts its longest road trip of the season in Massachusetts. The Orange are in Boston to take on Harvard at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23.
LAST TIME OUT
Sophomore midfielder/forward Kate Hostage scored off a penalty kick in the 27th minute, and redshirt senior goalkeeper Jordan Harris recorded her first shutout of the year to lead Syracuse to a 1-0 win against St. John's last Thursday night at SU Soccer Stadium. It was the Orange's first home win of the season, as the squad improved to 2-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 ACC.
The Orange's two-match winning streak is their longest since the team won back-to-back matches against Cornell and Fairfield last season.
FOUR MATCHES ON THE ROAD
The Orange close out the first month of the season with their longest road trip of the year. After Harvard, 'Cuse remains on the road for their first three matches of September, playing at Northeastern, Penn State and Colgate.
Syracuse is 1-0-0 on the road this year, picking up an away win against UConn earlier this season.
CLUTCH GENE
When Hostage scores, the Orange win. Hostage's team-high two goals this season have both proved to be game-winners.
She headed home the match-winning goal in the 64th minute at UConn to give 'Cuse a 2-1 win. Her goal off a penalty kick in the 27th minute against St. John's was the lone score in Syracuse's 1-0 win.
WELCOME TO THE 'NO GOAL ZONE'
Harris notched her first clean sheet as a member of the Orange with a season-high six saves in the win against St. John's. The shutout is the ninth of her career, having tallied eight in her three seasons at Arkansas.
Harris is the first 'Cuse goalkeeper to record a shutout in a win since Courtney Brosnan tallied two saves in 1-0 victory vs. Miami last season (Oct. 11, 2017).
BRONZE LOOKS GOOD ON ORANGE
Junior midfielder Georgia Allen scored the match-winning goal in penalties to help England beat France and claim a bronze medal at the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup. Allen was away from the Orange while she was representing her home country of England at the U20 World Cup in the Brittany region of France and returned to the team Monday.
England went 2-0-1 in group stage play, defeating North Korea and Mexico and settling for a draw against Brazil. The Young Lionesses advanced to the quarterfinals, where they beat the Netherlands, 2-1. England lost 2-0 vs. Japan in the semifinals, ending its run for the World Cup title and setting up its date with France in the third-place match.
Allen was in England's Starting XI for the match against the Netherlands, playing all 90 minutes. Allen, originally from Suffolk, England, is a familiar face on the Young Lionesses squad, first competing for England in 2011 as part of the U15 team.
Allen started 10 of Syracuse's 18 matches last season and led all Orange midfielders with four points.
11 SEASONS AND COUNTING
Head coach Phil Wheddon is in the midst of his 11th season with the Orange. During his time at the helm, Syracuse has accumulated a 68-95-27 record.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
Harvard enters the match with a 0-2-0 overall record after opening its season with losses at California and San Francisco last weekend. Leah Mohammadi scored the Crimson's first goal of the season in their 2-1 loss at San Francisco.
Syracuse and Harvard are tied in the series history, 1-1. The Orange won last year's match by a score of 1-0, as Hostage scored the match's lone goal, finding the back of the net with a shot in the 50th minute.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange are on the road for the next three matches, concluding their Massachusetts road trip against Northeastern at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2. 'Cuse then travels to Penn State Thursday, Sept. 6 and Colgate Sunday, Sept. 9.
