Orange Upended by Harvard

BOSTON – The Syracuse women's soccer team's two-match winning streak came to an end Thursday afternoon, as the Orange suffered a 4-0 setback against Harvard in Boston, Mass. Syracuse's record drops to 2-2-0 overall, 0-0-0 ACC with the loss.
"We knew that Harvard was a very good team with some very dynamic players," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "Both teams had opportunities, but we weren't able to execute technically. We put a number of shots on frame, but we really didn't trouble their goalkeeper. We've got to be a little more ruthless in front of goal, and we've got to be better on our set pieces."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
After a goalless first half, Harvard drew first blood with a penalty kick goal in the 52nd minute. Sophie Hirst's kick from the spot found the back of the net, giving the Crimson a 1-0 lead.
Harvard later padded its lead with goals in the 63rd, 69th (via a second penalty kick) and 75th minute en route to its 4-0 win.
OF NOTE
The Orange tallied nine total shots in the match, with six registering as shots on goal. Junior forward Sydney Brackett and junior defender Taylor Bennett shared the team-high with two shots each while sophomore midfielders/forwards Kate Hostage and Mackenzie Vlachos both had one.
Junior midfielder Georgia Allen made her return to the pitch after missing the first three matches of the season while she was representing her home country of England at the U20 World Cup in France. She played 33 minutes in her season debut with the Orange.
HEAR MORE FROM COACH WHEDDON
"Their first goal was a combination of errors, and it ultimately ended up in the back of the net. We're punished for taking care of the small details that are necessary against a very good team on a very fast, artificial surface."
"As I told the team at the end of the match, we have to have a short-term memory. We didn't execute, and when I say we, I mean everyone. Ultimately as a coach, you're responsible for what happens on the field. We got the scouting report right, but at the end of the day we didn't execute for 90 minutes."
"Upwards and onwards. We can't dwell on it. We'll learn, get better and turn it around on Sunday."
UP NEXT
Syracuse wraps up their Massachusetts road trip against Northeastern at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2. The Orange then travel to Penn State Thursday, Sept. 6 and Colgate Sunday, Sept. 9.
