SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's soccer team looks to get back to its winning ways Sunday in Brookline, Mass., when it plays Northeastern at 1 p.m. in the first ever meeting between the two programs.
LAST TIME OUT
Syracuse's two-match winning streak came to an end Thursday afternoon, as the Orange suffered a 4-0 setback against Harvard.
After a goalless first half, Harvard drew first blood with a penalty kick goal in the 52nd minute. Sophie Hirst's kick from the spot found the back of the net, giving the Crimson a 1-0 lead. Harvard later padded its lead with goals in the 63rd, 69th (via a second penalty kick) and 75th minute en route to its 4-0 win.
The Orange's record drops to 2-2-0 overall, 0-0-0 ACC with the loss.
BRONZE LOOKS GOOD ON ORANGE
Junior midfielder Georgia Allen scored the match-winning goal in penalties to help England beat France and claim a bronze medal at the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup. Allen was away from the Orange while she was representing her home country of England at the U20 World Cup in the Brittany region of France and returned to the team Monday.
England went 2-0-1 in group stage play, defeating North Korea and Mexico and settling for a draw against Brazil. The Young Lionesses advanced to the quarterfinals, where they beat the Netherlands, 2-1. England lost 2-0 vs. Japan in the semifinals, ending its run for the World Cup title and setting up its date with France in the third-place match.
Allen was in England's Starting XI for the match against the Netherlands, playing all 90 minutes. Allen, originally from Suffolk, England, is a familiar face on the Young Lionesses squad, first competing for England in 2011 as part of the U15 team.
Allen, who started 10 of the Orange's 18 matches last season and led all Orange midfielders with four points, played 33 minutes in her 2018 season debut Thursday at Harvard.
A LOOK AROUND THE CONFERENCE
The ACC has five women's soccer teams ranked among the United Soccer Coaches and Soccer America Top 25 polls, including three teams ranked among the top six. North Carolina is No. 3/6, followed by No. 4/3 Florida State, No. 6/4 Virginia, No. 12/24 Duke and No. 13/12 NC State.
The ACC owns four wins over teams ranked in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Northeastern enters the match with a 2-3 overall record, recording wins against UConn and Boston University on their home turf at Parsons Field. Valentina Soares Gache scored a 35-yard goal in double overtime against BU Thursday to give the Huskies their first win in four games.
This is the first meeting between the Orange and the Huskies.
HEAR IT FROM COACH WHEDDON
"We've got to have at least three points coming off this road swing here in Boston. Northeastern has some very dangerous pieces, and we're playing at their place and on their turf. Their season hasn't been going the way they want it to go, and they're looking for a turning point. We've got to make sure we're not their turning point."
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange will remain on the road for the next two matches after this matchup against the Huskies. 'Cuse plays against Penn State at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6 before facing Colgate at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9.
