Buchanan's Career Night Leads Orange to Victory

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse sophomore Tajon Buchanan scored his second goal of the night in the 88th minute to give the Orange a 4-3 victory against Hofstra at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 2. Buchanan played a part in three of Syracuse's four goals and posted a career-high five points.
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The winning play started on a free kick by senior Hugo Delhommelle. He served the ball into the box where a Hofstra defender tried to clear it, but instead, it deflected off of freshman Hilli Goldhar to Buchanan on the left side of the goal. Buchanan collected the ball, turned and fired his shot in the back of the net for the game winner.
Â
After neither team scored for the first 38 minutes of the second half, the squads combined for three goals in the final seven minutes. The score was tied, 2-2, at halftime and remained that way until the 84th minute when Goldhar recorded his first career goal off assists from fellow freshman Ryan Raposo and Buchanan. Hofstra (0-3-1) scored the equalizer in the 87th minute when Luke Brown hit the top left corner on a shot from 20 feet for his second of the night.
Â
Buchanan answered for the Orange (2-1) 1:08 later for his team-leading third goal of the year. He leads the team with eight points this season, which is just two less than he recorded in his rookie campaign in 2017.
Â
"I thought we worked extremely hard, lacked a little bit of quality second half on the final pass, but I thought we were good value to go up 3-2," head coach Ian McIntyre. "But then credit to Hofstra. We have to get better at game management, closing the game out. We can improve that part. What we can't coach is that character and willingness to keep going. This team will keep pushing until that final whistle blows."
Â
OF NOTE
Syracuse scored four goals in a game for the first time since it defeated Pittsburgh, 4-0, on Nov. 2, 2016 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Â
With the victory, the Orange improve their record in home openers under the direction of Coach McIntyre to 7-1-1.
