SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange (3-0) celebrate a legend and look to continue their perfect start tomorrow afternoon at the Carrier Dome.
Syracuse will retire all-time leading rusher Joe Morris' No. 47 jersey at halftime when the undefeated Orange host former BIG EAST rival UConn (1-2). The game is set to kick off at 4 p.m. on ESPNews.
Syracuse is coming off a 30-7 win over Florida State last Saturday. The Orange defense limited the Seminoles to just five first downs over the first three quarters and held Florida State scoreless through the first three periods. UConn earned its first win of the year last weekend, defeating FCS foe Rhode Island by the score of 56-49.
RECOGNIZING GREATNESS
Morris' No. 47 jersey will be the fifth one retired in the history of the program. He joins Larry Csonka (39), John Mackey (88), Donovan McNabb (5) and Don McPherson (9) as former Syracuse standouts in that elite group. The No. 44, worn by 25 players, including legendary running backs Jim Brown, Ernie Davis and Floyd Little, is also retired and hangs from the Dome rafters.
Morris holds or shares 15 Syracuse records, including the marks for the most career (4,299), season (1,372), and single-game rushing yards (252 vs. Kansas, 1979).
HISTORIC START ON THE HORIZON
Syracuse is looking for its fifth 4-0 start to a season since 1959 and the first since the 1991 season. An Orange victory would also mark the first 4-0 beginning to a campaign for Dino Babers in his seven seasons as a collegiate head coach.
A win on Saturday would raise Syracuse's record to 3-0 in non-league games this season, guaranteeing the Orange to be above .500 against out-of-conference opponents for the first time since 2011.
ORANGE ON THE MAP
Following its win over Florida State, the Orange received two points in this week's Associated Press poll and 11 points in the most recent Amway Coaches rankings. It's the first time since Oct. 23, 2011 Syracuse earned a vote in the AP Top 25. In 2011, Syracuse received votes in the wire service poll after a 49-23 win over No. 11 West Virginia that boosted its record to 5-2.
Attention for the Orange in the Amway Coaches poll has been much more recent. Syracuse earned points in last year's preseason poll and again on Oct. 15, 2017 after beating Clemson.
NOT IN OUR HOUSE
Syracuse's stout third-down defense this season isn't a fluke. The Orange finished last season ranked 13th nationally in the category, and their strong 2018 start moved them to No. 4 over the last two seasons in all of FBS football.
In 2018, Syracuse has limited Western Michigan to 2-of-10 (.200) on third down, Wagner to 5-of-18 (.278), and Florida State to 1-of-14 (.071). Against the Seminoles, Syracuse did not allow a third-down conversion until the fourth quarter and forced 10 FSU punts on 14 possessions.
The Orange have also found success in the takeaway department. Syracuse's six interceptions rank seventh nationally and are tied with Boston College for the ACC lead. The Orange are +4 in turnover margin on the year and have turned those opponent miscues into 27 points.
True freshman defensive back Andre Cisco has done the heavy lifting with a team-leading three interceptions. Redshirt junior cornerback Christopher Fredrick, senior linebacker Kielan Whitner, and redshirt freshman defensive lineman/linebacker Tyrell Richards all have one pick this season.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Saturday's meeting is the 11th all-time pairing between the schools. Syracuse and UConn played every season from 2004 to 2012 as members of the BIG EAST Conference.
While the Huskies, led by former Syracuse quarterback and assistant coach Randy Edsall, have won six of the 10 prior meetings between the team, the Orange have won the last two by the combined score of 71-34. A win on Saturday will be Syracuse's third straight against UConn.
Quarterback David Pindell is the engine that drives the Huskies. He has nearly 1,000 yards of total offense threw three games. Pindell is their top ground-gainer (334 yards) in addition to his passing yardage (656). UConn's receiving corps has split targets for the most part, with five players catching 8+ passes.
Defensive back Tyler Coyle leads the team in tackles by a wide margin with 32. Linebacker Kevon Jones (24 tackles) has a team-best four tackles for loss, including one of UConn's three sacks this season.
UP NEXT
Syracuse returns to conference play next week when visits Death Valley for a date with Atlantic Division rival Clemson on Saturday, Sept. 29. Kickoff is scheduled for noon on ABC.
