9/21/2018 9:18:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 22/11 Virginia scored less than three minutes before halftime and again five minutes after intermission to defeat Syracuse, 2-0, in men's soccer action on Friday, Sept. 21. It marks the first time Syracuse has been shut out this season.
Â
"We created chances," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "But give Virginia credit. I think we have a talented group of players. As I said to the guys, now we have to work to become a good and then a great team."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The teams appeared to be headed to a 0-0 tie at halftime, but Virginia (4-0-2, 1-0-1) took the lead in the 43rd minute. Joe Bell served the ball into the box on a free kick where Kennedy Nwabia headed it into the back of the net. The Cavaliers added to their advantage in the 51st minute when Nathaniel Crofts scored on an assist from Irakoze Donasiyana.
Â
Syracuse (3-3, 0-2) was the more dangerous team after Croft's goal. The Orange's best chance came in the 73rd minute when Michael Lantry's shot went off the crossbar. The ball ricocheted to John Austin Ricks, whose shot went wide. Syracuse outshot Virginia, 9-1, in the second half, but couldn't get a shot past Cavaliers' goalkeeper Colin Shutler, who has given up just one goal this season.

UP NEXT
Syracuse is back in action on Monday, Sept. 24 when it hosts Colgate at 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission and parking are free of charge.
