Orange, Raiders Play to 1-1 Tie
9/24/2018 11:21:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Sondre Norheim scored in the 77th minute to tie the score, but neither team could get the go-ahead goal as Syracuse and rv/-- Colgate played to a 1-1 tie at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Â
"Two teams battled it out and it was kind of a slugfest for 90 minutes," Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre said. "The extra time becomes a little bit about gaining territory. The game did open up and both teams had some chances and both teams probably they could have (won) it. It was probably a fair result."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
After neither team scored in the first half, Colgate (4-1-4) took the lead in the 69th minute. Ryan Krueger's first shot went off the crossbar, but the ball rebounded back to Krueger, who put his next shot in the back of the net.
Â
The Orange (3-3-1) recorded the equalizer eight minutes later on a set piece. Senior Hugo Delhommelle served the ball into the box on a free kick, where he connected with Norheim, who placed his header in the right corner of the goal. It was his second goal of the year and the third assist of 2018 for Delhommelle. Both goalkeepers made saves in the final 15 minutes of regulation to send the match to overtime.
Â
Both teams had scoring chances in the second overtime session, but Syracuse couldn't get any of its three shots on frames, while Orange goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert stopped Colgate's only shot in overtime.
Â
OF NOTE
Monday's match was the 69th all-time meeting between Syracuse and Colgate. The all-time series is tied at 29-29-11.
Â
UP NEXT
The Orange return to ACC play on Friday, Sept. 28 at No. 14/25 Virginia Tech at 7 p.m.
