LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A spirited performance ended in heartbreak for the Syracuse women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon, as Louisville scored the match-deciding goal with nine seconds remaining in regulation to win 1-0.
The Orange move to 3-8 overall and 0-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with the heartbreaking setback.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Syracuse and Louisville were deadlocked at zero through the first 89 minutes of action, but all that changed when Brooklynn Rivers scored the Cardinals' match-winning goal with nine seconds left in regulation.
The goal, assisted by Maisie Whitsett's cross, sealed the win for Louisville.
OF NOTE
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jordan Harris started and tallied a match-high seven saves – all of which she recorded in one half of play. Her seven saves are a new season high.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx entered the match at the start of the second half and recorded three saves.
The Orange had six shots, led by junior defender Taylor Bennett's two shots. Junior forward Sydney Brackett had one shot, as did junior midfielder Georgia Allen.
Allen scored in the 68th minute, but the goal was waved off because of a handball.
HEAR IT FROM COACH WHEDDON
"I'm super proud of our effort. To come all this way and lose with nine seconds on the clock is demoralizing. The players are obviously upset and devastated because we felt we could've won this game. Louisville is a very, very athletic and direct team. It's a very challenging style to play against, but our team held strong for almost 90 minutes. I thought that we created more chances and were more dynamic with our attack. That's a massive positive for us. I give our players a ton of credit for really committing to a gameplan. Everyone gave 110 percent, and as a coach, that's all you can ask for."
"The ACC is unforgiving, and one moment is all it takes. Unfortunately that moment broke in Louisville's favor in the last 10 seconds of the match."
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange wrap up the three-match road trip Saturday at Miami in Coral Gables, Fla.
Syracuse won last season's match-up by the score of 1-0 and own a 6-3-1 record all-time against the Hurricanes, who are former BIG EAST Conference rivals.
