Orange's Stout Defensive Effort Not Enough in Loss at Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The Syracuse women's soccer team limited Miami to just two shots on goal but could not find its offensive spark, suffering a 1-0 setback against the Hurricanes Saturday night. The Orange's record now stands at 3-9 overall, 0-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.Â
"The effort and the intensity were there," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "Our student-athletes worked exceptionally hard. Defensively, we were fairly good. Miami has some dynamic players, and I thought we handled them quite well."Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Orange held Miami to just two shots on goal, but one of those shots found the back of the net. Miami's Gudrun Haralz's goal in the 33rd minute, set up by her teammates Bayleigh Chaviers and Jamie Brunworth, clinched the match for the Hurricanes.
Syracuse's offense, which totaled six shots, had opportunities throughout the match, but could not record the equalizer.
OF NOTE
Junior defender Taylor Bennett led the Orange with two shots. Senior forward Drina Domic and sophomore defender Molly Nethercott each had one shot on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx started in goal before redshirt senior goalkeeper Jordan Harris relieved her at the beginning of the second half. Harris tallied two saves while in goal.
HEAR MORE FROM COACH WHEDDON
"We played some of the best soccer we've played all year, but we couldn't sustain the ball movement and possession. Miami gets the goal, which turned out to be the winning goal, but I don't think they troubled us with their shots."
"We had some opportunities off of set pieces that we thought might give us the advantage. Our attack on set pieces caused them some trouble, but we've got to make sure those opportunities are on frame. We have to be almost perfect with the opportunities we get."
"We have to regroup. We've got two big matches coming this week. I believe in this team. They have the ability. We're going through adversity, but we've got to rise to the challenge."
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange return to the friendly confines of SU Soccer Stadium for three consecutive home matches.
Syracuse plays NC State at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4 before hosting UNC at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7. The homestand ends against Notre Dame Saturday, Oct. 13.
