SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A season-high 14 three-pointers, including six from Elijah Hughes, led Syracuse (14-5, 5-1 ACC) to a 73-53 defeat of Miami (9-9, 1-5 ACC) Thursday night at the Carrier Dome.
The Orange finished the night just one shy of the school record for game 3-pointers, a mark set in five different contests.
Hughes' six three-pointers helped him tie a career-high 22 points. He connected on 8-of-13 from the floor, including 6-of-9 of his 3-point attempts. Hughes contributed in many ways, contributing three rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocks. Buddy Boeheim reached double-digits for the second consecutive game, adding 12 points on a night where he shot 3-of-6 from 3-point range. In his 80th consecutive start, Tyus Battle narrowly missed his first career double-double with 10 points and a personal-best nine assists.
The Orange were helped by a balanced scoring offense that saw eight players score at least two points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
With Syracuse holding a slim, three-point, 42-39, second-half lead, the Orange offense exploded for a 19-5 run that gave them a 14-point, 61-44 advantage. The span included four 3-pointers, three of which came from Hughes, who racked up nine points in the six-minute stretch. Battle and Marek Dolezaj got in on the action with five points each in the span, while the Syracuse defense held the Hurricanes to 2-of-11 from the field.
BOEHEIM'S THOUGHTS
"Tyus was off tonight and Oshae, and other guys stepped up. That's really the key. Frank hit some big shots in the first half and just played smart. Tyus had nine assists -- I know that's a record for him -- and Marek had five again. There's not many folks who have the 2:1 assist ratio and he (Dolezaj) does that. He's starting to look for his scores, he can find places in there to score as well."
RED HOT FROM THREE
The Orange produced their third consecutive game with double-digit treys Thursday night. Syracuse connected on 8-of-16 3-pointers in the first half (.500) and continued at a similar rate after the break, canning 6-of-14 (.429) in the final 20 minutes.
SHOOTING CONTEST BEGINS EARLY
The 3-point contest began early as the pair of teams opened the game with similar looks from 3-point range. The Orange's 3-of-6 production was almost mirrored by Miami's similar 3-of-5 shooting. Miami's early advantage was aided by an 11-3 rebounding advantage and the Hurricanes constructed a 17-11 advantage.
Syracuse's impeccable shooting kept them in the game. The Orange tied the game with an 8-2 stretch that included Howard's third 3-pointer of the night. Miami and Syiracuse traded a pair of shots before a 3-ball by Boeheim gave the Orange their first lead of the night, 23-22. Following a jumper by the Hurricanes, Hughes kick started a string of eight unanswered points for Syracuse, pushing them ahead 31-24. Miami halted the run to end the half with a pair of shots, narrowing Syracuse's margin at halftime to 32-29.
OF NOTE
The Orange begin a three-game road trip on Saturday, Jan. 26 at No. 10/8 Virginia Tech. Tip time is set for 8 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN.
Syracuse's next home game is Tuesday, February 5, against Florida State. Tickets are available by calling 888-DOMETIX or by linking to cuse.com/tickets.
