SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 18/16 Syracuse Orange women's basketball team (16-4, 5-2) is set to square off against the Virginia Cavaliers (8-12, 2-5) in an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) showdown on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The Orange are coming off an 11-point comeback victory over Duke on the road, while Virginia is in search of its second win in three games. Fans can catch the game live on ACC Network Extra.
'Cuse suffered its first home defeat of the year last Wednesday at the hands of the first ranked opponent to visit the Dome this season – No. 23 Miami. Syracuse got back in the win column on Sunday when it earned its first victory in school history at Cameron Indoor Stadium, taking down Duke 64-55.
A constant throughout both games was the consistent scoring of Kiara Lewis. The redshirt sophomore guard set a career high in points against Miami with 16, then surpassed that mark just a few days later at Duke with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting and 5-of-9 from behind the arc. The Orange shot a blistering 40 percent (10-25) from three against the Blue Devils, continuing their trend this season of strong three-point scoring. With 191 made triples, Syracuse ranks 12th in the nation in three-point field goals made.
For Virginia, scoring has been at a premium so far this season. The Hoos rank 14th in the conference with an average of 58 points per game and have been outscored by an average of 6.7 points per contest. Despite the offensive struggles as a team, Jocelyn Willoughby has put together a strong scoring season to lead the Cavaliers. The junior guard/forward is tops on the team with 12.4 points per game, including a 44.4 percent mark from three. Willoughby is also second on the roster in offensive rebounds with 44.
Following the matchup with the Cavaliers, the Orange hit the road to face No. 3 Louisville in Kentucky on Thursday, Feb 7 at 7 p.m. This will be the final road game for Syracuse before a five-game homestand, beginning on Feb. 10 against Boston College.
