SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 10 Syracuse women's tennis team hosts No. 19 Virginia in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams this Friday, Feb. 1. First serve between the two nationally-ranked programs is set for 2 p.m. inside Drumlins Country Club.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
The Cavaliers moved up two spots to No. 19 in the Oracle/ITA Team Top-25 Poll this week after going 1-1 at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament. Virginia, ranked No. 21 last week, dropped its match with then-No. 10 Oklahoma State before rallying with a win over No. 18 Illinois.
Virginia is led by senior Meghan Kelley, who is the No. 32 singles player in the country. She pairs with freshman Sofia Munera as part of the No. 10 doubles duo in the nation.Â
WHAT'S NEW WITH THE ORANGE
Syracuse improved to 4-0 with back-to-back wins against No. 9 Michigan and Purdue last weekend at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament, punching its ticket to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship for the first time ever. The Orange jumped up 14 spots in the polls, moving from No. 24 to No. 10 - the highest ranking in program history.
Senior Gabriela Knutson, currently the No. 43 singles player in the country, is the reigning ACC Player of the Week after leading the Orange to the wins over the Wolverines and Boilermakers. She defeated Michigan's Kate Fahey, who is the No. 3 singles player in country.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
Conference play for the Orange continues on Super Bowl Sunday. Syracuse heads to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to face Boston College at 10 a.m. Sunday, February 3.
