Hoppner Scores for Second Straight Game in Orange's Loss at RPI
1/8/2019 6:30:00 PM | Ice Hockey
TROY, N.Y. - After closing the first half of the regular season with a goal, junior forward Anonda Hoppner started the second with another. Her goal was all the Syracuse women's hockey team would muster against RPI, however, as the Orange lost 2-1 to the Engineers inside Houston Field House on Tuesday evening.
Syracuse's record moves to 4-15-1 overall following the loss in the first game of 2019.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Orange controlled the puck from the very start and unloaded shot after shot on RPI goaltender Lovisa Selander. Syracuse outshot the Engineers by a margin of 25-11 over the first two periods, but it was RPI that struck first and second.
RPI's Emma Hicks scored the game's first goal with under five minutes left to play in the opening period, and Lauren Severson scored the Engineers' game-winning tally one period later. She scored an even-strength goal midway through the second, giving RPI a 2-0 lead.
Hoppner's fifth goal of the season cut the deficit back to one five minutes into the third period, but that was as close as the Orange would get. While Syracuse outshot RPI, 17-8, in the final 20 minutes and unleashed a flurry of attacks on net in the closing moments of the period, Selander did not back down.
The Engineers goaltender finished with 41 saves (.976 save percentage) and held off the Orange's repeated comeback efforts.Â
OF NOTE
Hoppner's goal is her second in as many games. She scored her fourth goal of the year at No. 10 Colgate on Dec. 8, in what was the Orange's final game of the 2018 portion of the season.
Junior forward Kelli Rowswell and freshman forward Lauren Bellefontaine were credited with assists on Hoppner's goal. Rowswell is second on the Orange with eight assists, while Bellefontaine ranks third with seven.
Junior goaltender Ady Cohen, making her first appearance between the pipes since against No. 1 Clarkson on Oct. 26, started in net and recorded 17 saves. She has made 107 saves (.870 save percentage) in five games this season.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange jump back into conference play later this week. Syracuse next makes its way to Rochester, N.Y. to take on CHA opponent RIT at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11.
