Syracuse, N.Y. – After a four-game road stretch that concluded with a 1-1 weekend on the west coast last week, the 14th ranked Syracuse field hockey team is excited to return home to face No. 1 North Carolina at J.S. Coyne Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Orange celebrate Alumni Weekend and expect to have a number of notable alumni back on campus to cheer on Syracuse at 1 p.m.
It's Field Hockey Fights Cancer and fans are encouraged to wear pink to help raise awareness for breast cancer in conjunction with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Parking and admission to all Syracuse field hockey games are free. Fans unable to attend can watch Saturday's top-15 matchup on ACCNX online or via the WatchESPN App.
Syracuse (8-3, 1-1) faces its third top-5 opponent of the season in the Tar Heels Saturday. Goalkeeper Sarah Sinck ranks #16 in the nation for her goalie win-loss percentage, while Charlotte De Vries ranks top-5 in the nation in goals per game (2.45).
North Carolina is 10-0 this season and is the only remaining undefeated team in the country. The Tar Heels are led by Erin Matson, who has tallied 16 goals, 41 points, and 58 shots this season. Catherine Hayden adds 11 goals, 22 points and 31 shots to combine for more than half of UNC's goals.
Saturday will be the first meeting between the two teams since Syracuse lost to the Tar Heels, 5-1 during the 2018 regular season in Chapel Hill. Last time the Orange defeated UNC was the 2015 National Championship game when Syracuse claimed its first national title by any women's team in program history.
Following Saturday's matchup, the Orange have a week to prepare before a weekend road swing to No. 17 Boston College and No. 4 UConn on Oct. 18 and Oct. 20, respectively.
