SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 14th-ranked Syracuse field hockey team rallied late in Saturday's Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) matchup but the undefeated No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels held on for a 3-1 win. Freshman Charlotte de Vries scored her team-leading 14th goal of the season in the fourth quarter to snap UNC's streak of three-straight shutouts. The Orange welcomed alumnae back to J.S. Coyne Stadium and celebrated the group with a halftime recognition on Saturday.
North Carolina took a 1-0 goal late in the first quarter on a goal by Marissa Creatore. Catherine Hayden's goal line pass snuck past Syracuse's goalkeeper and found Creatore to tap it in for the lead in the 13th minute. Erin Matson, the nation's leading scorer, added an unassisted goal off a corner to tally her 17th goal of the season for a 2-0 lead in the 22nd minute.
Carolina outshot Syracuse 5-2 in the first half and had a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Creatore added an insurance goal for UNC in the 49th minute to give the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead. De Vries scored with under eight minutes to play when she split three UNC defenders and fired a shot that ricocheted off the post and into the back of the cage. It marked the first goal North Carolina's goalkeeper Amanda Hendry had allowed in over 235 minutes (Sept. 22 vs. Appalachian State).
Syracuse edged North Carolina in shots, 3-2, in the second half and Sarah Sinck made four saves in goal.
The Orange move to 1-2 in the ACC and return to league action on the road at No. 17 Boston College on Friday, Oct. 18 in Chestnut Hill, Ma. Game time is 6 p.m. on ACCNX. 'Cuse will then play at No. 4 UConn on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m.
