SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Â Severin Soerlie made his Senior Night a memorable one as he scored the first goal in Syracuse's 3-0 victory against No. 23 North Carolina State on Oct. 26. The win was the 200th in Orange head coach Ian McIntyre's career and improved Syracuse's record to 7-4-4, 2-3-2 in ACC play.
Â
"I thought we were terrific from the opening whistle," McIntyre said. "That's a very good NC State team. They are well coached and have some extremely dynamic, exciting players. I'm proud of the guys that we got a clean sheet and I thought it was a dominant defensive performance."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Soerlie entered the match in the 36th minute and found the back of the net less than a minute later. Soerlie started the play by passing the ball to freshman Luther Archimede down the right side. Archimede chased down the ball before it crossed the end line and sent it into the box where Soerlie knocked it into the back of the goal to give the 'Cuse a 1-0 lead.
Â
The score stayed that way until the 63rd minute sophomore Ryan Raposo scored off a free kick from sophomore Hilli Goldhar. The final goal came in the 67th minute when freshman Amferny Sinclair collected the ball after it deflected off a Wolfpack defender and knocked it into the top left corner with a hard shot.
Â
While the Orange offense was clicking, the defense quickly shut down any opportunity NC State (8-4-3, 3-3-1) had on its offensive end. When the Wolfpack did get off a shot, Syracuse goalkeeper Christian Miesch was there to make the save. He tied his season high with four saves.
Â
OF NOTE
The victory improved McIntyre's career record to 200-131-61. He is in his 10th season at the helm of the Orange program and has guided Syracuse to a record of 93-67-29. The Basildon, England native started his career at Oneonta State, where he led the Red Dragons for four seasons. He returned to his alma mater, Hartwick, in 2003, before he took over the helm of the Syracuse program in 2010.
Â
Raposo's goal is his 12th of the season. He is now tied for 10th place on Syracuse's single-season record.
Â
The Orange honored their senior class before the match. Massimo Ferrin, Brian Hawkins, Nyal Higgins, Jake Leahy, Matt Orr, Mickey Watson, and co-captains John-Austin Ricks and Soerlie have led the Orange to two NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the third round, and a national ranking as high as No. 2.
